Black River (Ottawa National Forest)

We spent most of the day Friday driving around, visiting waterfalls on the Black River which runs through Ottawa National Forest in the UP. We had a great time walking up and down the riverbed, climbing on rocks and getting up close and personal with the falls on the Black River.

Presque Isle River and Falls

On Thursday we hiked part of the Presque Isle river trail, which has some mighty fine lookin’ waterfalls. The river has many twists and turns, which made for some great adventuring as I excitedly anticipated what might be around the next bend.

A view from the mouth of the river as it empties into Lake Superior.

The riverbanks are lined with mature hemlocks, white pines and maples.

The prize for me was getting right up there, nose-to-nose, with the rushing falls.

Little Bohemia Lodge

Last Wednesday morning, on the way up to Porcupine Mountains State Park, we stopped for breakfast at Little Bohemia Lodge, scene of the infamous shootout between John Dillinger and gang and FBI men led by Melvin Purvis. The same scene was filmed here for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, released earlier this year.

Below are actual bullet holes in the actual walls and windows of one of the dining rooms, unaltered from when the shootout occurred in 1934. Click to enlarge.

The upstairs rooms were also damaged a great deal during the shootout but had been repaired. Here’s what Hollywood did to make it look more like what it may have looked like at the time of the shootout.

The food was good. The service was excellent. Our waitress let us go upstairs all by ourselves, even though people are only supposed to go up there as part of a tour.
